WHAT: “Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers” workshop

WHEN: Thursday, November 5, 2009

WHERE: Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

FOR WHOM: faculty scientists, engineers, Ph.D. students

BY WHOM: The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) WHY: to learn more about communicating science to news media and the general public, as well as the broader impacts requirement for NSF-funded research.

BACKGROUND: The AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology has partnered with NSF to provide resources for scientists and engineers, both online and through in-person workshops, to communicate more broadly with the public. The Web site can be found at www.aaas.org/communicatingscience. Although traditional scientific training typically does not prepare scientists and engineers to be effective communicators outside of academia, NSF and other funding agencies are increasingly encouraging researchers to extend beyond peer-reviewed publishing and communicate their results directly to the greater public. No registration fee to attend but space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Please register by Fri, Oct 30, 2009. You can register by sending the requested information by email to OLPA-workshops@nsf.gov or by faxing the registration as indicated on the form. This workshop will be held from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Please plan to attend the full day. The workshop will include a joint session with communication officers from academic institutions, who will be meeting separately for most of the day. We expect that both those who are interested in science communication and those who are already familiar with ways to communicate science broadly will find “Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers” useful and informative.
