Welcome to Biotech
Mission
To promote research, education and technology transfer for applications of biotechnology for the benefit of the environment, agriculture, engineering and veterinary and human medicine.
Goals
- Develop collaborations between life scientists and physical, engineering and computational scientists in biotechnology and life science technologies.
- Develop and support facilities and services to serve academic and institutional researchers
- Develop mutually-beneficial relationships with industry to conduct research and technology transfer
- Develop economic development programs that address specific needs of biotechnology and life sciences industries in New York
- Develop educational programs to ensure wide dissemination of intellectual discoveries to all audiences
About the Institute
The Institute for Biotechnology and Life Science Technologies, located in the Biotechnology Building, is the successor of the Cornell Biotechnology Program that was established in 1983 to promote the new discipline of modern biotechnology. A revised charter and new name were adopted in June 1999, reflecting the evolution of the program: "embracing education, training and research in advanced technologies and their application to societal needs, using basic principles in physics, chemistry and engineering." A major role is to promote the education and training of biologists, engineers, agricultural personnel, and medical scientists. The Institute serves as a focal point for bringing together university scientists conducting research in the biological and physical sciences.
See the YouTube video for an overview.
The Institute umbrella administratively supports the Center for Life Science Enterprise, the Life Sciences Core Laboratories Center, and the Institute for Genomic Diversity.
We are also administrative home to the McGovern Family Center for Venture Development in the Life Sciences, a state-of-the-art on-campus business incubator.
